Thoreau’s Cabin – There has been a lot said about the simplicity of Henry David Thoreau’s cabin on Walden Pond in Concord, Massachusetts. It is simple! But if you take the time to walk the area where he built it you would understand how perfect a match it is for the environment. A shelter that afforded comfort and quiet to amass volumes of written observations on nature and people that later (7+ years) were to be organized and focused into one of the best pieces of literature of all time. That is “Walden”.
One of many Concord based day trips is a walk around Walden Pond. About a 1.7 mile flat terrain hike. Toward the back-end of the pond there is a marker showing the location of where the cabin was located. Henry’s experiment with nature lasted a little over two years. The land has not changed much since Henry lived there. Thanks to conservation efforts it is pretty much like it was back in the 1800’s except there are no crews out on the ice in winter sawing up blocks for the ice house!
At the entrance is a replica of the cabin based on Henry’s notes complete with a desk, table, stove and bedding. If you are looking for a great day trip then Walden Pond is the place.
Walden Pond also has a small beach that attracts sunbathers. There are numerous “mini” beaches around the perimeter that couples will usually gravitate to for a picnic or just spend the day. Great pond to kayak as well. Visit the official website from the State of Massachusetts – Read More
